If there’s one thing that gives a home old-world luster and class, it’s a marble surface. Whether it makes up floors, countertops, furniture, or some other part of the house or apartment, marble has a timeless beauty and charm. But even though it’s stone, a new marble surface isn’t invincible. Here are four tips for keeping marble surfaces beautiful.
Apply a Sealant
Marble is naturally porous, but sealant prevents food, drinks, and other things from staining and damaging its look. The application of sealant isn’t a one-time deal. Replace the coating at least once a year to ensure it repels everything from oil to water to wine long enough so that you can wipe it up. Otherwise, those substances will settle in and require you to eventually have the entire surface restored. An experienced professional will apply sealant correctly.
Keep It Clean
As already mentioned, you must clean up messes on marble right away. Wine, tomato sauce, citrus juices, olive oil, and food coloring can set quickly in marble. Spills are bad enough, but an unattended bottle, can, or jug of any of the above substances can leave unsightly rings behind. Of course, if your marble is in the kitchen, this could be a never-ending battle. Use a soft microfiber cloth or sponge with warm water and a gentle cleaner (with no acidic content) to wipe it up. Ignore what the internet tells you when it suggests using vinegar, bleach, or similar cleaners. They can etch the surface. Rinse and dry off the surface immediately so that you don’t leave wet spots that can set in.
Know What Can Cause Damage
Even though it’s stone, marble can be sensitive. At the least, its finish can be finicky. As mentioned, don’t set anything dripping with or leaking oil, alcohol, fruit juice, or other acidic foods on a marble surface. Hot metal pans and dishes won’t scald or stain marble, but they do tend to scratch and mar the surface. Place coasters and trivets to keep these items and objects from making contact.
Do Some Pretty Polishing
Recognize the signs that it’s time to restore your marble floor or other surface. These include dullness, discoloration, damage, and stains. Daily cleaning is good, but if you really want marble to shine, schedule a polishing. A professional will come to your home and use marble polish and several tools to bring it back to life. If necessary, they’ll fill in any cracks and pits and then buff it to a high radiance.
Those are just four tips for keeping marble surfaces beautiful. Take care of your marble surfaces, and your home will retain its high value longer!
